Recent official data shows that trade volume in China's cross-border e-commerce pilot cities surpassed 3 billion yuan (US$ 489 million) by the end of 2014. E-commerce exports surpassed 2 billion yuan (US$ 326 million) across 16 pilot cities, including Shanghai and Beijing, in the 18 months since July 2013, while imports totaled 1 billion yuan (US$ 161 million), the General Administration of Customs (GAC) data showed.
For both merchants, consumers and the logistics operators in/out China however, the path to online purchases across borders is still a bumpy one. Cross-border deliveries often mean back-office administrative headaches including still major bottleneck with China customs, unexpected duties and taxes, currency conversion issues, increasing risk of fraud and deliveries delays.
